Memphis

What’s a family trip that’s stayed with you?

Our family visited New Orleans, Memphis, and Chicago last year. Taking a train to get us to our destinations (of course, my youngest wouldn’t have it any other way).

Memphis stood out on this trip for two reasons: the hotel located right at the train station (so cool) and visiting the National Civil Rights Museum housed in the Lorraine Motel (where Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated). You can see the rooms (preserved) where they stayed and their cars parked, in addition to the timeline of civil rights and the plight of people of color and what they have endured in this country. Every citizen should visit this museum (in my opinion), it’s enlightening and empowering — it’s within all of us to advocate, speak out, stand for what is right. My kids agree too. They were blown away by what they learned.

Seeing this hallowed space is what drew our family here, but the knowledge we left with made us so much richer. Tough to bet a family trip that includes this.

What family vacations have been memorable for you? What impacted your family in an unexpected way?
